“Confirm Email Address” in Salesforce Actually Verify Emails

Question

With active bounce management, I get information like this near the email address.

Email bounced

Using Classic, I get this additional email confirmation link.

Confirm email address

This leads me to this dialog.

Bounced email

The “Bounce Email” dialog does not seem to exist in Lightning. And the link says “Confirm Email Address” while it really only seems to remove the bounce information. Is my assumption correct? Is there any standard functionality that resembles a “confirmed email address” that I can also query by its own field? Like an email where you click a link to confirm your email address. The only information I could find so far was relating to users only.

Answer

Understanding Active Bounce Management in Salesforce

With active bounce management enabled, Salesforce tracks email bounces and displays bounce-related information next to the email address on records like Contacts and Leads. When an email hard bounces, Salesforce automatically marks it as “Email Bounced” and prevents further emails from being sent to that address.

In Salesforce Classic, there used to be a “Bounce Email” dialog that provided additional information. However, in Lightning Experience, this specific dialog does not exist. Instead, Salesforce provides a link labeled “Confirm Email Address”, which allows users to manually clear the bounce flag.

Does “Confirm Email Address” Actually Verify the Email?

No, the “Confirm Email Address” link in Salesforce does not verify the email address in the way that a traditional email verification system would (such as sending an email with a confirmation link). Instead, it simply removes the bounce flag, allowing emails to be sent to that address again. This means that Salesforce does not automatically validate whether the email address is still valid or if the issue that caused the bounce has been resolved.

Is There a Standard “Confirmed Email Address” Field?

Salesforce does not provide a standard “Confirmed Email Address” field for Leads or Contacts that functions like a typical email verification system. However, some relevant options include:

User Email Verification (Only for User Records)

  • For Salesforce User records, there is an email verification process where users receive a confirmation link when their email address is changed.
  • This process does not apply to standard objects like Contacts or Leads.

Custom Email Verification Process (For Contacts/Leads)
If you need to implement email verification for Contacts or Leads, you would need a custom solution, such as:

  • Creating a custom “Email Verified” checkbox on Contact/Lead records.
  • Sending an email with a verification link using Salesforce Flow, Apex, or Marketing Cloud.
  • Updating the Contact/Lead record once the recipient clicks the verification link.

Third-Party Email Verification Services
If you need a true email verification system, you can integrate Salesforce with third-party services like:

  • NeverBounce
  • ZeroBounce
  • Validity (BriteVerify)
These services can validate email addresses in real-time and mark invalid/bounced ones before sending.
